Learn how to get the most out of SlateData

The Assistant

Ask about your data, or how to use SlateData. The assistant finds the data, runs the queries, and proposes charts and slide decks for you to apply.

Opening the Assistant

  • Press Cmd+J (Ctrl+J on Windows) on any page, or click the assistant's mark at the bottom right.
  • On a workspace's Overview, type into the Ask the assistant bar, or choose New, then Ask the assistant and describe the chart or slide deck you want.
  • On a datasource's page, click Ask the assistant to ask about that data.

Type your question and press Enter (Shift+Enter starts a new line). Type @ to mention a datasource, table, chart or slide deck by name, so the assistant knows exactly what you mean. The page you're on is attached to your message as a chip, so "this chart" or "this deck" refers to it; delete the chip to leave it out. Stop ends a reply early.

What It Can Do

  • Find where data lives, read tables, and write and run read-only SQL against the workspace's datasources, then tell you what the results show. Every number it states comes from a query it ran, which you can open.
  • Make charts from the results, and change existing ones: their data, chart type, title, colors and other settings.
  • Build a whole slide deck from your data, or add charts and text to a deck, lay out and style its slides, write speaker notes, add a cover slide, and remove the slides or blocks you name.
  • Answer questions about using SlateData, from this Help Center.
  • Open a chart, deck or slide for you, or Open in editor to load one of its queries in the visualization editor.

It can't share, export or present, invite people, connect or edit datasources, change settings or permissions, or delete charts, decks or datasources; for those it tells you where to do it yourself. It only uses the data of the workspace you're in.

Applying Its Changes

The assistant never changes anything by itself. Each change it suggests appears as a card in the chat, and nothing happens until you click Apply; Discard drops it. A reply with several changes has Apply all and Discard all, as well as each change's own buttons. While changes are waiting, a bar above the message box says so, and Review jumps to them.

A change you applied to a slide deck can be taken back with Undo on its card (Undo all for a set) as long as the deck hasn't changed since; after that, use the deck's Version history. New charts, chart changes and new decks can't be undone from the card: delete the chart or deck, or restore the chart's earlier version.

Chats

Your chats are private to you and to the workspace they're in. Click the chat's title to switch to an earlier one or Search chats; New chat starts over, and Chat options has Rename and Delete chat. Collapse puts the assistant away. A new chat knows what you made with the assistant in your earlier chats in that workspace.

Limits

Each chat runs one reply at a time, and you can only have a few replies running across your chats at once; the assistant says so if you hit either. AI use may also have a weekly or monthly allowance, for you or shared by your organization, workspace or group; when one is used up, the assistant says when it resets. The AI Settings & Limits topic has more.
