Datasources

Connect, configure, and manage the data behind your visualizations.

What is a Datasource?

A datasource is a connection to a database or warehouse, or a space for files you upload, that SlateData can query to power visualizations. Datasources can belong to a single workspace or be shared across the organization by an administrator. A workspace's datasources are listed on its Overview, with its slide decks and visualizations.

Supported Connectors

SlateData supports the following connector types:

ConnectorDescription
PostgreSQLConnect to any PostgreSQL-compatible database (host, port, user, password, database, SSL option)
MySQLConnect to a MySQL database (host, port, user, password, database)
ClickHouseConnect via HTTP or Native TCP protocol (host, port, user, password, database)
DatabricksConnect using server hostname, HTTP path, and access token (optional catalog and schema)
SnowflakeConnect with your account, user, password, warehouse, database, and schema (optional role)
TrinoConnect to a Trino cluster (host, port, user, password, catalog, schema)
ElasticsearchQuery a self-hosted or Elastic Cloud cluster with SQL (anonymous, username and password, or API key)
Data SpaceUpload CSV, JSON, or Parquet files and query them with SQL right away
File SpaceUpload CSV, JSON, or Parquet files, organized in folders, to query later

Other connectors in the list are marked Coming soon and can't be connected yet.

Adding a Datasource

  1. On the workspace's Overview, click New, then Data.
  2. Choose a connector type, or All connectors… for the full list.
  3. Fill in the required connection fields (host, port, credentials, etc.) and click Next.
  4. Review the details and click Create followed by the connector name (for example Create PostgreSQL). SlateData checks the connection as it creates the datasource and tells you if it can't connect.
  5. For Data Space and File Space, upload your files next.

Workspace, Organization & SlateData Datasources

Workspace datasources belong to a single workspace. Members who can edit the workspace can add them; the workspace's owner (or any organization admin) can change or remove them. Organization datasources are available to every workspace in the organization. They appear on each workspace's Overview marked Organization, read-only, and organization admins manage them in Organization settings > Datasources. SlateData datasources are shared with every organization by SlateData.

In Organization settings > Datasources, a datasource's row has Explore, which opens the editor on it, a switch, and, for the organization's own datasources, Edit for its connection (SlateData datasources can't be edited). On a datasource you manage, the switch enables or disables it; a disabled one leaves the editor's pickers. On a SlateData datasource, it switches it off for the whole organization. A workspace owner or admin hides an organization or SlateData datasource from just their workspace with Hide from this workspace in its ⋯ menu on the workspace's Overview, and brings it back with Show in this workspace. Nothing in a workspace can query a hidden datasource, so charts that use it stop refreshing until it's shown again.

Editing & Removing Datasources

On the Overview, click a datasource to open its details. Its ⋯ menu has Open details, Ask a question (a new visualization from that datasource) and, for the workspace's owner, Edit connection. On the details page, use Edit connection settings to update the connection, or Remove if it is no longer needed. When visualizations use the datasource, you can either disable it (the visualizations keep their current data but can't refresh) or delete it together with those visualizations.
