Learn how to get the most out of SlateData
Permissions & Roles
Roles live in two places: your role in an organization (what you can do and whether you pay for a seat) and your membership in each workspace (where you have access).
Organization Roles
Each organization member has one role in the organization. The role determines what they can do across the organization's workspaces, and whether the seat is billed.
Inviting People to an Organization
- Go to Organization settings > Members and click Invite member.
- Enter their email address and pick a role. Only owners can invite an Admin.
- Click Send invite. They get an email with a link to the invitation, where they log in, or create an account with that address, and accept. You can also copy the link and send it yourself.
Invitations last 14 days. Pending ones are listed under Pending invites, where you can copy the link, Resend an invitation (which also renews an expired one) or revoke it. Someone who creates their account from an invitation joins your organization straight away, instead of getting an organization of their own; they can create one later.
Workspace Membership
Workspace membership controls access — who can see a workspace at all. The two roles are:
Only members (directly or via Group access) see a workspace and what's in it. Organization admins also see any workspace's settings and members from Organization settings > Workspaces, and its content once they add themselves. A workspace SlateData makes public, such as an example workspace, can be viewed read-only by everyone in its organization.
Groups
Groups let you grant workspace access to many users at once.
- Organization admins create groups in Organization settings > Groups and add users to them.
- Workspace owners (or organization admins) can then add a group to their workspace with Add a group in Workspace settings > Members.
- All members of the group inherit access to the workspace; what each individual can do is still determined by their organization role.
- Rename a group, or change its description, with Edit on its page.
Managing Members
Workspace owners and organization admins can manage members from Workspace settings > Members:
- Add users with Add by email — they're added as workspace members, and anyone without an account gets an invitation.
- Remove members who no longer need access.
- Make another member the owner with Make owner on their row. The previous owner stays on as a member. Viewers can't own a workspace, so change their organization role first.
- Add or remove groups for batch access management.
Leaving
To leave an organization or a workspace, open My profile and choose Leave next to it. All organizations has Leave for each organization too. Everyone stays in the Default organization. An organization's last owner makes someone else an owner before leaving, and a workspace's owner makes someone else its owner first: Change owner in My profile opens its Members. Leaving a workspace keeps any access a group gives you.
